What we store
Your email address, so we can send the newsletter and sign you in; whether you are a free or a paid reader; and, for paid readers, the identifiers our payment provider gives us. We never see or store card details.
What we measure, and why
We learn what engages readers. For that we record, per reader, which pages you open, how long an item stays open, whether you open our emails and which links in them you click. This is tied to an internal number, not to your email address, and a screen of ours never lists readers by name.
- A cookie on this website holds a random number (
visitor_id, one year). It lets us count one person once across visits. - Each email contains a tiny image and links unique to you, so we can see opens and clicks. Mail apps that preload images make opens unreliable; clicks are the reliable signal.
- When you confirm your sign-up or sign in, visits made earlier in the same browser are linked to your internal number.
We use this only to understand and improve the newsletter. It is not sold or shared.
Delete your data
You can delete your data at any time. If you pay, the subscription is cancelled first. Your address, sign-in details and the link between your visits and you are removed; we keep anonymous counts so past figures stay correct.
